How to Use the Salary Calculator
Estimate take-home pay in four quick steps:
- Select a country — US, UK, UAE, or India using the buttons above.
- Enter annual gross salary — Use the currency prefix shown for that country.
- Choose pay frequency — Monthly is most common; weekly and bi-weekly options are available. Add pre-tax deductions if known.
- Click Calculate take-home — See net per paycheck, taxes per paycheck, annual net, and effective tax rate.
Example (US): Annual gross $75,000, single filer, 5% state tax, monthly pay. The tool estimates federal tax, FICA, and state tax, then shows roughly $4,500–$4,800 net per month depending on deductions — use the form for the exact estimate. Calculations stay private in your browser.
What Is Take-Home Pay and Why It Matters
Take-home pay is net income after taxes and mandatory deductions. Job offers are often quoted in gross terms, which makes cross-country comparison misleading. A £50,000 UK role, a $75,000 US role, an AED 180,000 Dubai package, and a ₹1,200,000 India CTC are not interchangeable without converting each to monthly net and adjusting for cost of living.
| Context | Typical input | What this model emphasizes |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $75,000 gross | Federal brackets + FICA + optional state % |
| United Kingdom | £45,000 gross | Income Tax + employee NI (simplified) |
| UAE / Dubai | AED 180,000 | Usually no personal income tax on salary |
| India | ₹1,200,000 | New-regime style slabs + cess estimate |
| Pakistan (planning) | PKR package | Compare offers with budget tools; confirm FBR rules separately |
For Pakistan-style planning, treat any foreign calculator as a structure guide: start from annual package, estimate monthly net, then map rent, utilities, and savings in a budget planner. Always confirm local tax with current FBR slabs.
Method: How Net Pay Is Estimated
Conceptually, every country mode follows the same flow:
Annual net ≈ annual gross − estimated annual tax − modelled deductions
Worked US-style sketch ($75,000, single, 5% state, no extra deductions):
- Gross = $75,000
- Taxable income after a simplified standard deduction feeds progressive federal brackets
- FICA ≈ Social Security (capped) + Medicare on wages
- State ≈ 75,000 × 5% = $3,750
- Sum federal + FICA + state → annual tax; divide by 12 for a monthly paycheck view
UK sketch (£45,000): Personal Allowance reduces taxable income; basic-rate tax at 20% applies on the taxable band; NI is estimated on earnings above the threshold. Net is typically in the mid-£30,000s annually on this simplified model.
UAE sketch (AED 180,000): Tax = 0 in this model → monthly net ≈ AED 15,000 if there are no extra deductions.
India sketch (₹1,200,000): New-regime style slabs apply progressive rates; a rebate may zero tax at lower incomes; cess is added on tax. Run the India mode for the numeric estimate rather than relying on mental math.
Important Limitations & Common Mistakes
Do not treat these estimates as a payslip:
- Missing benefits and pensions: 401(k), workplace pension, health premiums, and student loan can change net significantly.
- Comparing gross across countries: Always convert to monthly net and living costs before judging which offer is “higher.”
- Using outdated brackets: Tax years change. Re-check official IRS, HMRC, UAE, India, or Pakistan sources for the current year.
- Ignoring pay frequency: Bi-weekly (26) vs semi-monthly (24) changes paycheck size even when annual net is the same.
